How it works
You don't need to be a cryptographer to feel safe here. But if you want to know exactly how this works, here's the honest, short version.
1. Your phones make their own keys
When you and your partner pair up, both phones generate their own private keys. The keys live in a secure chip on each phone. They never leave. We never see them.
2. Everything is locked before it leaves you
When you send a message, take a photo, or make a call, your phone wraps it in a sealed envelope using your partner's key. We pass the sealed envelope along. We can't open it.
3. Only their phone can open it
Your partner's phone is the only thing in the world that can unlock that envelope. Then they read the message, see the photo, hear your voice. The original never existed on our servers.
4. We can't help anyone unlock it
Not a hacker. Not a court order. Not a government. Not us. The math is the lock, and the key isn't in our pocket.

About backups
WhatsApp ships your chat history to whichever cloud your phone trusts. Your backup ends up on someone else's server, often without the same encryption that protected the original messages. We do it differently.
Backups live in our own storage, not Apple's, not Google's. Locked with a passphrase only you know.
Lose the passphrase and the backup is gone. Even we can't recover it. That's the trade-off you'd want, not the one to fear.
iPhone, Android, doesn't matter. Sign in, type the passphrase, your messages and vault come back.
If you'd rather skip backups entirely, you can. Your data stays on your phone, no copy anywhere.
